Connecting to GSA WiFi

This User Guide will help GSA students and staff to connect to the WiFi network. Visitors to the GSA Library can gain WiFi access via a different process – please consult the Connecting to WiFi as a visitor User Guide.

Students and staff must first register their device, before connecting to the network. This process should only have to be completed once – thereafter your device should automatically connect to the WiFi network whenever you are on campus.

This User Guide is in four sections. Please click one of the links below to jump directly to the section relevant to your device:


Mac Users

There are 10 steps in this process. Please complete all 10 steps – you should only have to do this once.

REGISTER YOUR DEVICE

STEP 1

Ensure that your device’s WiFi is switched on. From your list of available WiFi networks, select:

GSA-WIFI-REGISTRATION

Once your device has connected to this network, open Safari, and try to navigate to any web page.

You should be automatically redirected to the Device Registration Portal.

If you are not automatically redirected, type 1.1.1.1 in the address bar and press Enter. This should redirect you.

Enter your student username in the format: a.surname1
Staff usernames are in the format: a.surname

Enter your normal GSA password.

Click Sign On.

On the next page, click Start.


STEP 4

Enter a Device Name, such as ‘Laptop’ or ‘MacBook’. You can register up to five separate devices. Naming each one helps to identify your devices in future.

The Description field can be left blank.

Click Continue.

You should be directed to a page which indicates that you have successfully registered your device.

The registration process is now complete – you should not have to do this again. You can now connect to the GSA1-WIFI network, following the steps below.


CONNECT TO GSA1-WIFI

Return to your device’s list of available WiFi networks, and select:

GSA1-WIFI

Enter your GSA username and password.

Click OK.

In most cases, you will now be connected to GSA1-WIFI. To complete the process, proceed to step 8.

In some cases, you will be presented with a Verify Certificate window – see the next step.


STEP 7

If you are presented with a Verify Certificate window, click Continue.

You may then be prompted to make changes to your Certificate Trust Settings.

The username and password required here are not your GSA details – they are your computer’s administrator login credentials.

You should now be connected to GSA1-WIFI. To complete the process, proceed to the next step.


STEP 8

Click on the WiFi icon in the Menu Bar.

Select Open Network Preferences.

wifimac_10In the Network window that opens, click Advanced.

In your list of Preferred Networks select: GSA-WIFI-REGISTRATION

then click the minus icon beneath the list.

If the GSA-Guest-2 network appears in this list, you can also select and delete that.

Do not delete GSA1-WIFI.

Click OK

Click Apply.

This final step will prevent Mac OS from joining incorrect GSA WiFi networks in future.

You should now be connected to GSA1-WIFI, and in future your computer should connect to this network automatically when on campus.

PC Users

There are 13 steps in this process. Please complete all 13 steps – you should only have to do this once.

Different versions of the Windows operating system may vary slightly, but the process described in this user guide is essentially the same for recent versions of Windows.

REGISTER YOUR DEVICE

Ensure that your device’s WiFi is switched on. Click the Wireless Networks icon in the Task Bar, and from your list of available WiFi networks, select:

Click Connect.

Once your device has connected to this network, open a browser window and try to navigate to any web page.

You should be automatically redirected to the Device Registration Portal.

If you are not automatically redirected, type 1.1.1.1 in the address bar and press Enter. This should redirect you.

Enter your student username in the format: a.surname1
Staff usernames are in the format: a.surname

Enter your normal GSA password.

Click Sign On.

On the next page, click Start.


STEP 4

Enter a Device Name, such as ‘Laptop’. You can register up to five separate devices. Naming each one helps to identify your devices in future.

The Description field can be left blank.

Click Continue.


STEP 5

The next page will inform you that you must download the Cisco Network Setup Assistant. This will happen automatically.

At the bottom of your browser window you may be given the option to Keep or Discard the file – select Keep.

You should see the downloaded file NetworkSetupAssistant.exe. Click on the file to run the application.wifipc_7

If you see a message reading:

Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?

click Yes.

If you do not see this message, continue to the next step.


STEP 6

The Network Setup Assistant will open.

Click Start.


STEP 7

If you see a message asking

Do you want to DELETE the following certificate from the Root Store?

click Yes.

If you do not see this message, continue to the next step.


STEP 8

If you see a Security Warning

click Yes.

If you do not see this message, continue to the next step.


STEP 9

If you are prompted to enter your Network Password, this is your standard GSA login password – the one that you would use to log in to any GSA computer/your GSA email/the VLE etc.

If you are not prompted for this password, continue to the next step.


STEP 10

In some instances you will see a message to say that your device has been successfully configured; in others you will be informed that configuration has failed.

In either case, you can click Exit.

The registration process is now complete – you should not have to do this again. You can now connect to the GSA1-WIFI network, following the steps below.


CONNECT TO GSA1-WIFI

You should now try to connect to the network

GSA1-WIFI

You may be automatically prompted to enter your login details. If you are not automatically prompted, connect manually to GSA1-WIFI by clicking on the Wireless Networks icon and, from your list of available wireless networks, selecting GSA1-WIFI.

You can check the Connect automatically box.

Click Connect.

If you see a Windows Security Alert, click Connect.

Enter your student username, in the format: a.surname1

Enter your normal GSA password.

Click OK.


STEP 13

If prompted, repeat steps 11 and 12 – you may have to enter your login details for a second time.

You should now be connected to GSA1-WIFI, and in future your device should connect automatically to this network when on campus.

iOS Users

You should be automatically redirected to the Device Registration Portal.

Enter your normal GSA password.

Touch Sign On.

On the next page, touch Start.

Enter a Device Name, such as ‘iPhone’. You can register up to five different devices. Naming each one helps to identify your devices in future.

The Description field can be left blank.

Touch Continue.

You should be directed to a page which indicates that you have successfully registered your device.

The registration process is now complete – you should not have to do this again. You can now connect to the GSA1-WIFI network, following the steps below.


CONNECT TO GSA1-WIFI

Return to your device’s list of available WiFi networks, and select:

Enter your student username in the format: a.surname1
Staff usernames are in the format: a.surname

Enter your normal GSA password.

Touch Join.

If you are presented with a Security Certificate:

Touch Trust.

CONNECT TO GSA1-WIFI

Return to your device’s list of available WiFi networks, and select:

You will be prompted to enter your GSA username and password.

Enter your username in the Identity field.

Leave the Anonymous Identity field blank.

Enter your password in the Pasword field.

Touch Connect.

You should now be connected to GSA1-WIFI, and in future your device should connect to this network automatically when on campus.
